Filling Advent calendars sustainably

“A gift is worth just as much as the love with which it was chosen.”

– Thyde Monnier, French writer, 1887 – 1967

Self-made and self-filled Advent calendars are an excellent way to give your loved ones a little joy. There are no limits to your imagination. Both with the packaging and the filling. In this blog article you will find a few inspirations on how to fill your Advent calendar in a sustainable way.

How to Fill Advent Calendar

It all starts with the packaging. You will probably find many of these things at home and can reuse them. If you choose the packaging beforehand, it will give you a good idea of what small items will fit inside. Or you already know what you want to put inside. Then you have an idea of the size of the packaging.

The following things, among others, are suitable for this:

  • little parcels
  • Bags
  • Small bag
  • Jam jars
  • and much more.

Once the desired packaging has been found, the real fun begins: the filling!

Depending on who the calendar is for, it can be filled with anything your heart desires. For those with a sweet tooth who like to snack every day, the calendar could contain sweets, biscuits, nuts or even dried fruit.
Sweet calendars are always a hit with children, but they will also love small toys such as play figures, small puzzles, spinning tops and the like. If you like to do handicrafts, fill the calendar with small craft items such as washi tape, stickers, small stamps or erasers.
If you want the calendar to be more of a little self-care package, then put bath salts, tea, bookmarks, a knitted hat, nail polish, candles made from sustainable wax or homemade scrub inside.

Other ways to fill the Advent calendar creatively are:

  • Socks
  • Seeds for next spring
  • a divided puzzle, so that a picture can be put together further each day
  • Origami Instructions
  • A new ingredient for a biscuit recipe every day

Give time instead of stuff

Christmas is also the time when everyone gets together. An Advent calendar is a nice occasion to give away kind words or time together. One way to do this is to write a letter for each day. Or you can think of creative vouchers, for example for a film evening together, for mulled wine at the Christmas market or simply for a walk together.

Pay attention to sustainability

If you want to focus on sustainability when filling the advent calendars, there are no limits. There are many sweets, foods, cosmetics and other alternative products that are vegan and whose CO2 emissions are reduced or offset. But you don’t always have to buy new things. Many things can be reused. Do you still have old pearl necklaces lying around at home? Then separate them and use the beads as craft material.
